Himalayan White Water Challenge from Friday

To spread the message that rafting is possible in post-quake Nepal, Nepal Association of Rafting Agents (NARA) is organizing 14th Himalayan Whitewater Challenge 2015 from November 27 to 29 on Trishuli River.

According to NARA, the main objective of the event is to spread the message that all 16 rivers in Nepal opened for white water rafting is open and safe for visitors. The event also aims to promote and expand river activities to bring more foreign tourists, officials of NARA said in a press meet in Kathmandu on Sunday.

Three competitive events - Kayak Slalom, Kayak Boater Cross and Kayak Freestyle - will be organized during three days. Interested people can participate in senior, junior and women categories. Participants finishing in top three positions in each category can take home Rs 100,000, Rs 65,000 and Rs 35,000, respectively.

"By organizing the event, we want to spread the message that the April earthquake has not made any impact in water activities in Nepal. Tourists can still come and enjoy this adventurous activity," Chandra Bahadur Dahal, president of NARA, said in the press meet. He also said the government's decision to include 14 districts as earthquake-affected district has affected rafting business. "Most of the rivers popular among rafters like in these districts."

According to NARA, participants from Australia, the United States, Canada, Germany, Norway, the United Kingdom, India, China, Malaysia, Holland, Poland, Bhutan, South Korea and Japan have already confirmed their participation.

"Around 70 foreigners and more than 100 Nepalis are expected participate in the event," said Dahal.

NARA is charging $45 as entry fee for foreigners. Nepalis can register by paying Rs 2,500 each. The estimated budget of 14th Himalayan White Water Challenge 2015 is Rs 2.5 million.

Seventy-two rafting agencies are under the umbrella of NARA. Officials of NARA said 15 percent of foreign tourists coming to Nepal indulge in different white water activities.
